The "Dance of Zalongos" is a legend which has a referrence to an historical core event that took place after the final occupation of Souli by the troops of Ali Pasha. On December 18, 1803 (old calendar), at the top of Mount Zalongo, a group of Souliotisses (female) and Souliotes (male) with their children decided to die free rather than fall into the hands of the Turkes-Albanes.
Thus, with an act of self-sacrifice, they preferred, instead of being dishonored by their eternal enemy, to fall from the edge of the cliff.
Some sources of that time, or later, report that the Souliotisses fell while dancing and singing.
A big applause to the U.S. armed forces for honoring this anniversary with this amazing performance.
