ΤΑ ΤΕΣΣΕΡΑ ΠΟΔΙΑ ΤΟΥ ΤΡΑΠΕΖΙΟΥτου Ιάκωβου Καμπανέλλη-THE FOUR LEGS OF THE TABLE by Iakovos Kampanellis

Επτά αδέλφια, κληρονόμοι ενός οικονομικού κολοσσού, ζουν κάτω από την τυραννία της «παρουσίας» ενός υπέργηρου πατέρα – «φυτού», που διατηρεί το 51% των μετοχών, κρατώντας έτσι τους διαδόχους του σε άγνοια για την μελλοντική υπόσταση του καθενός μέσα στην εταιρεία.

Ανελέητες ραδιουργίες και λυσσαλέοι καβγάδες γίνονται συνέχεια ανάμεσα τους, σχηματίζονται συμμαχίες και διαλύονται μέσα στην ίδια πρόταση. Κάποιος συμφωνεί, μέχρι να θυμηθεί ότι δεν τον συμφέρει. Άλλος διαφωνεί — χωρίς να ξέρει γιατί, αλλά με απόλυτη σιγουριά ότι έχει δίκιο.

Στην κορύφωση της πιο κωμικοτραγικής άγριας διαμάχης διαπιστώνουν με απόγνωση ότι κυνηγούν μια τελειωμένη υπόθεση και ότι επενδύουν σ’ ένα μέλλον που δεν το ορίζουν οι ίδιοι και που αργά ή γρήγορα θα τους ξεπεράσει. Ξαφνικά! Σιωπή! Κάποιος ξεσπά σε γέλια και, ένας-ένας αρχίζουν να γελούν όλοι αμήχανα.

Για πρώτη φορά, τους περνά από το μυαλό η ίδια σκέψη, ταυτόχρονα: Καβγάς για το ποιος θα καθίσει σε μια καρέκλα… που δεν υπάρχει ή “πολύ κακό για το τίποτα”

THE FOUR LEGS OF THE TABLE

Seven siblings, heirs to a vast business empire, live under the tyranny of the “presence” of their extremely elderly father—a man in a vegetative state—who still holds 51% of the company’s shares. As long as he remains the majority shareholder, his successors are left in the dark about their future roles and standing within the corporation.

Relentless scheming and ferocious quarrels erupt constantly among them. Alliances are forged only to collapse within the very next sentence. One sibling agrees—until realizing that agreement is no longer in their best interest. Another objects, without even knowing why, yet with absolute conviction that they are right.

At the height of their most darkly comic and savage confrontation, they come to the painful realization that they are fighting over a lost cause, investing their hopes in a future that is no longer theirs to shape and that, sooner or later, will leave them behind.

Then, suddenly… silence.

Someone bursts into laughter, and one by one, the others awkwardly begin to laugh as well.

For the first time, the same thought crosses all their minds at exactly the same moment: they have been fighting over who gets to sit in a chair that does not even exist—or, in other words, making much ado about nothing.
