Στη ζώνη που βρίσκεται ανάμεσα στις λαβές εικονίζεται εκφορά (μεταφορά) νεκρού σε άρμα, μια σπάνια και μεγαλοπρεπή σκηνή που τιμά την αριστοκρατική καταγωγή του νεκρού. Δεξιά και αριστερά απεικονίζονται ανθρώπινες μορφές να συνοδεύουν την εκφορά με τα χέρια στο κεφάλι, προφανώς σε στάση θρήνου. Τα διάφορα κενά συμπληρώνονται με διακοσμητικά μοτίβα και ζώα.Σε μια δεύτερη ζώνη από κάτω εικονίζονται άρματα, που τα σέρνουν δύο άλογα, με ηνιόχους που φορούν κράνη και κρατούν οκτώσχημες ασπίδες.
Το αγγείο χρησίμευε ως σήμα στον τάφο κάποιου Αθηναίου ευγενή. Δεχόταν σπονδές, που μέσω της διάτρητης βάσης του ποδιού του, κατέληγαν στο νεκρό.Οι γεωμετρικές φόρμες και οι σκηνές τελετουργίας αποκαλύπτουν πώς η αρχαία ελληνική τέχνη της γεωμετρικής περιόδου άρχισε να αφηγείται συλλογικές εμπειρίες πολύ πριν την εμφάνιση της γραπτής ιστορίας.

The Attic late Geometric crater, a work by the Hirschfeld Painter, is a monumental crater (750-735 B.C.) found in the cemetery of Dipylon in Kerameikos.
The zone between the handles depicts the procession of a deceased person in a chariot, a rare and majestic scene that honors the aristocratic origin of the deceased. On the right and left, human figures are depicted accompanying the procession with their hands on their heads, apparently in a mourning posture. The various gaps are filled with decorative motifs and animals.
In a second zone below, chariots are depicted, drawn by two horses, with charioteers wearing helmets and holding eight-shaped shields.
The crater served as a mark on the tomb of an Athenian nobleman. It received libations, which, through the perforated base of its foot, ended up in the deceased.
The geometric forms and ritual scenes reveal how ancient Greek art of the Geometric period began to narrate collective experiences long before the emergence of the written story.
